Hair Loss - Causes and Treatments

Male pattern baldness refers to a significant loss of scalp hair. The most frequent reason for baldness is hereditary hair loss as people age. For some men, it begins at 30, while 50% of men get affected at 50. Some people would rather let their hair loss progress naturally without treatment. Others may hide it with hats, scarves, makeup, or hairstyles. Spire Pharmacy offers online consultations and prescribed hair loss treatment by our top UK-registered GP.

Hair loss, also known as Alopecia, is a condition brought on by a disruption in the body's natural cycle of hair growth. Although it can happen anywhere on the body, it mostly occurs on the scalp.

Although various medical and behavioral disorders can interrupt the development cycle and result in hair loss, they might be genetically inherited. Dermatologists at Spire are experts in conditions of the hair and scalp. They can determine both the kind of hair loss and its underlying causes.

Causes of Hair Loss

Androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, is genetic and occurs when genes and hormones in your body diminish your hair follicles and impair their ability to produce new hair. Some impacted hair follicles eventually stop producing new hairs as the affected hairs become thinner and paler in color. Male pattern baldness has the propensity to worsen over time if ignored. An autoimmune condition called alopecia areata causes recurrent bald patches by targeting the body's immune system and harming the hair follicles.

Some other types of hair loss can be temporary that is caused by the following:

● Stress

● An illness

● Cancer treatment

● Iron deficiency

● Significant Weight loss

● Poor Nutrition

Time to see a GP has come if you are having these problems:

● You develop bald patches

● You're losing hair in clumps

● You're worried about your hair loss

● Facing a sudden loss of hair

● Itches and burns in your head

When to see a doctor:

If you or your child is experiencing persistent hair loss and wish to seek treatment, make an appointment with our expert. Discuss early treatment options with your doctor if you're a woman suffering from a receding hairline (facial fibrosing alopecia) to prevent major permanent baldness.

Additionally, book your appointment online if you notice more hair falling out than usual when brushing or bathing your child's hair or if it falls out suddenly or in patches. Sudden hair loss can indicate an underlying medical disorder that needs to be treated.

Our GP will guide you about the treatment and causes after looking at your hair. You need to complete a short questionnaire-based consultation . Mention if the hair loss is affecting your lifestyle. Our UK-registered GPS will usually review within 24 hours and recommend an alternative treatment.

Hair Loss Treatments:

Hair loss caused by telogen effluvium or pharmacological side effects requires stopping the offending medicine. Hair loss may be reduced or stopped by limiting damage or chemical exposure (such as using a blow dryer, hair straightener, dyeing, or perm). Hair loss caused by malnutrition and sickness typically stops when a healthy diet and the underlying medical condition are adopted.

Propecia (finasteride), a five alpha-reductase inhibitor, is the most popular licensed prescription pill for male pattern baldness in the UK. It contains a single strength (1 my), which results in a shorter hair growth phase by lowering hormone levels in the scalp. Finasteride, a generic version of the active ingredient in Propecia, is also available in the market.

Minoxidil solution and foam are other treatments used to treat male pattern baldness. It is a “Pharmacy Only” medication approved for treating androgenetic alopecia in men and women. Minoxidil is not suitable for use if you experience sudden or patchy hair loss, unexplained hair loss (for instance, if you don't have a family history of hair loss), or postpartum hair loss. You must be at least 18 years old to use this product.

Wigs, tattooing, steroid injections, steroid creams, and hair transplants are other ways to treat hair loss.
